Sarah, Owner of Home Theory had a chance to chat with REDFIN earlier this month about mistakes Professional Organizers always see in client homes (and how to fix them!). We are so excited to represent the Charlotte, NC area in this nationwide collaboration with REDFIN.
"If your home feels messy despite your best efforts to curb the clutter, chances are you might be committing a common home organizing mistake to tackle the mess. We reached out to experts from Charlotte, NC to Honolulu, HI to share the most common home organizing mistakes they notice and organization ideas you can use to solve them so you can get your house back in order in no time. (In my best Buddy the Elf excited voice)... 5 weeks until Christmas! It's coming so crazy fast and I'm all in. I've been asked by so many friends what they should ask for as gifts for Christmas that can help them get organized, so here we go... My top 10 Professional Organizer "need it" items for your home that you can ask for this holiday season.
#1 Corelle Dishes
I know what you're thinking... DISHES? Yes, most definitely dishes... but specifically THESE dishes. Why? Corelle is super thin, stackable, extremely durable, style neutral, and takes up SO MUCH LESS SPACE than most dishware. It's an Professional Organizer's dream. Can't go wrong. Click the pic to check them out.
#2 No Slip Hangers
Hangers... boring right? But what if I told you all the Professional Organizers swear by them? Get in with the cool crowd and get yourself these velvet covered hangers. They not only protect your clothes, but are SUPER thin- increasing your closet capacity by 33%! No joke, these are tiny magic workers.
#3 Blueland Cleaners
Where are my fellow Shark Tank fans? Blueland has made it's mark in the cleaning world. We love this company! These non-toxic cleaners work well, come in attractive glass bottles, and REDUCE CLUTTER. Just store the tiny refill tabs in a cute bin and refill your cleaners without cluttering your cabinets with a million bottles. Good for the environment, good for organization.
#4 Fridge Bins
Get all those random food containers under control. We waste so much food by just forgetting what's shoved in the tiny containers in the back of the fridge abyss. Make your fresh food prep easier with these grab and go fridge containers. Just make sure you label the outside with a category and you'll never have to go searching for your food again.
There's nothing like a good label... not only do they help the brain with decision fatigue, but they help any space look crisp, clean, and like you have your crap together. My favorites are found on Etsy. Help a small business AND get your hands on gorgeous label options. Just click the pic.
#6 Spice Jars
These are on my personal wish list... How gorgeous are these spice jars? The key to a neatly organized space is consistency. Put all your spices in matching jars (with the cute labels above) and feel like a gourmet chef as you cook.
#7 Container Store Bins
The holy grail of all the bins... and a Professional Organizers' secret weapon. The Container Store white plastic storage bin. Comes in several sizes and works in any room. These bad boys are sturdy, simple, and I'm convinced everyone needs these in their life. Grab a pack of 12... you won't be sorry.
#8 Dry Goods Storage
There's a gazillion (I know, not a word, but you get my point) options for pantry storage and between clients and I, we've used our fair share of the options. If you're going for function, you can not go wrong with these. They are little kid proof (no more spilled stuff everywhere) and seal tight for fresher food longer. And again... CONSISTENT containers are the key to a pantry you'll both love and functions well. Plus, they won't blow the budget.
#9 Cereal Containers
If you have kids, you need these containers. If you don't have kids, but love cereal, you also need these containers. I have put them in many pantries and everyone is raving. They match the containers above (remember the consistency thing...) and they hold a crazy amount of cereal. I can get a family size box of Cheerios in these bad boys. Plus, the cap won't fall off even when your toddler knocks it off the table (and you know they will).
The first thing I typically have people toss when we organize their kitchen are the awful mismatched storage containers. If they look like junk, they.are.junk. I've been personally using these for YEARS and they have held up perfectly. They don't stain, they stack beautifully (hello organized cabinet), and they don't spill or leak- ever.
